Jagdish BaliOut of curiosity, once I asked my late dadaji who was well acclaimed Vaidya of the village, “Dadaji, can you tell me the name of the medicine or the herb that costs nothing and have no side effects?” “You see, my grandson, all the allopathic medicines have a bit of poison in them thus the side effects. The herbs and bhasm (powder) I give to the patients don’t have side effects, but they require much effort to prepare them, and money too. But I can guarantee that your smile and my laughter, your laughter and my smile and both – our laughter and our smiles – make the least expensive and the best medicines in the world without any side effects,” smiled dadaji while I laughed. Laughing and crying is innate to us. A baby comes into the world crying and starts smiling within a few days of birth and laughing aloud within a few weeks. According to a study on an average, a child laughs 150 times a day and an adult laughs 17 times a day. That conveys that with becoming adults, we forget to laugh and never forget to cry when adversity befalls us.

Smile is the testimony of God – his autograph on your face. You need not wash it off by the tears rolling down on your cheeks nor erase it by wrinkles of your frown. Smile is the least expensive, but the most attractive dress that matches well with every one’s face and beautifies it. Smile costs nothing. It does not impoverish the man who gives it, but enriches the person who receives it. To feel downcast when we lose something, is natural, but to carry the single loss too long robs us off of our hundreds moments of joy. Therefore, smile more, laugh aloud and cry less. Be you relatives or detractors, a single smile has the great power to abridge the gap and smooth the things over. If you smile to your enemy or detractors they will soon get tired of upsetting you and will either smile back or get perplexed. It creates such a curve that straightens everything. It exudes the positive vibes that are contagious, soon it changes into laughter and the whole atmosphere becomes vibrant and lively. So why not smile and laugh instead of sobbing and crying?

Laugh so that you may become happy and be happy so that you may laugh. Laugh everyday and laugh more to feel better and put spring back in your step as Charlie Chaplin said: “A day without laughter is a day wasted.” Now please smile, yes, smile! Yes that’s it. You are going to get portrait of your life.
