MNREGA Fares Poorly In Himachal

Ramesh Paharia

The ambitious project of Union Government MNREGA seems to be losing its breath in Himachal Pradesh. The claims to provide 100 days job under the plan at doorstep are proving to be hollow. The Rural Development Department and Panchayati Raj departments are failing to provide 100 days job to villagers, if figures are any indication. Only 156 people were lucky to get 100 days job under MNREGA in Himachal in nine months of 2016 from April to December 31. According to figures, there are about 11.72 lakh job card holders in Himachal Pradesh. And out of it only 156 persons got 100 days job under MNREGA.  Sirmaur, Mandi and Chamba district proved better than other districts in providing 100 days job under MNREGA. Maximum of 33 job card holders in Sirmaur got 100 days job under MNREGA while 32 job card holders in Mandi, 31 in Chamba, 18 in Hamirpur, 13 in Shimla and 12 job card holders in Bilaspur were lucky enough to get 100 days job. Kangra, Kinnaur, Killi, Lahaul-Spiti and Una district could not cross even the double figure and not a single person got 100 days job under MNREGA in Solan district. This indicates that either the related departments are failing to implement MNREGA scheme properly or gram panchayats are not giving importance to MNREGA. Workers in few areas are getting even less than Rs. 100 as daily wage whereas the minimum wage is Rs. 200 and workers get a daily wage of Rs. 300 to Rs. 400 through contractor in private work. Due to these factors, people are preferring to work in private area than in MNREGA.
