Entry Tax On Online Shopping

Shakeel Qureshi

The state government will earn more than Rs. 50 crore annually by imposing five percent entry tax on online shopping. However, the excise and taxation department does not have any confirmed estimates about this income because courier companies are not registered with the department. Besides this, the department is not aware of estimate of material that ships into Himachal through online shopping. A large number of people in Himachal prefer shopping through online mode and sensing this large volume, it is estimated that the government will earn more than Rs. 50 crore tax annually. It is pertinent to mention here that the state government has imposed five percent entry tax on online shopping. But this tax will be applicable for few months only. This tax will automatically come under the fold of GST when implemented in state. Therefore this tax will not be imposed for a longer period and it is why estimates on earning through this mode has also not been made until yet. People are purchasing every item from shoes, clothes to electronic items through online shopping mode. Business men community of the state is happy with the imposition of entry tax on online shopping. They opined that where on the one hand it will add more than Rs. 50 crore to the state exchequer annually, it will also provide relief to business community, as online shoppin g was affecting the business of local trading community to the tune of about Rs. 30 crore to Rs. 35 crore.

* The trading community will get relief from the imposition of entry tax on online shopping, as it was hurting local traders. Imposition of this system until introduction of GST will benefit the business community.

-Inderjeet Singh,

President, Vyapar Mandal

* There is no estimate of income to the government through tax on online shopping for now. Estimate could be made only after registration of courier companies and estimate of material items entering the state through online shopping mode.

– Sanjay Bhardwaj,
