CAD : A New Emerging Profession

By: Feb 18th, 2017 12:08 am

htwFew years back, planning and structural designing of complex buildings, machines etc. were done on drawing boards and paper, with various tools like pencil, eraser, compass, scale etc. With the advent of computer technology, especially with the software named CAD / CAM, these jobs have become easier and simpler. Computer-Aided Design and Drafting (CADD), most popularly known as Computer-Aided Design (CAD) is an electronic tool which enables quick and accurate drawing with the use of computer. CAD makes use of computer software programmes, special purpose hardware as well as graphics to generate drawings. CAD software is often referred to as CAD CAM software. CAM (Computer Aided Manufacturing) is a system of automatically producing finished products by using computer controlled production machines. Computer aided design involves creating computer models defined by geometrical parameters that appears on a computer monitor as a three-dimensional representation which can be readily altered by changing relevant parameters. This neat, clean and highly presentable CAD drawing has a number of advantages over drawings created on a drawing board. These electronic drawings can be modified quite easily; presented in a variety of formats and the existing components of the drawing can be rearranged to fit the new shape.

Eligibility

To become an expert CAD professional, one should possess graduation in engineering. Some reputed institutes, teach CAD software as part of their curriculum along with their 4 years bachelors degree course.

Job Prospects

The job prospects of the CAD professional vary on their specialisation in the profession. The major tasks of these people are creating designs or sketches of buildings, structures, machines, cars or any other product as per the requirement of the client, with regards to various possible loads and constraints. Some of the specialisation in the field of computer aided design are:

Drafters: Drafters prepare technical drawings and plans, which are used by production and construction workers to build everything from microchips to skyscrapers. They can work with architectural, engineering, and related services firms. Depending on their qualifications, Drafters can be classified as Structural Drafter – who support civil engineers and architects; Mechanical Drafter – who deals with machinery and mechanical devices; Electrical Drafter – who are associated with the electrical distribution system; etc.

Design Technician: Design Technicians are the individuals who are responsible for the technical aspects of the construction. These people make creative ideas about shape, color, and texture.

Engineering Aids: Engineering aids wing assist construction engineers in developing final construction plans by preparing land surveys, maps, sketches, drawings and blueprints. They also estimate costs, perform quality assurance tests on building materials etc.

Remuneration

Sky is the limit for CAD professionals. Pay scale of CAD degree/ diploma holders vary greatly depending on level of education and experience as well as area of specialty. At the initial stage a CAD professional can earn not less than Rs. 30,000/- per month. Depending on the organisation and the candidates skills, within a short span of time, the salary may rise to 40,000 to 45,000.

Coping With Exam Anxiety? Then This Is For You

htwNormal levels of stress can help you work, think faster and more effectively, and improve your performance. If you find your anxiety overwhelming, your performance could be badly affected. Becoming aware of what causes your anxiety will help to reduce the stress. Then you can manage it better and do yourself justice. Most of us suffer from anxiety around exam time. It’s normal. The anxiety can cause:

* Patchy sleep and sleepless nights.

* Irritability or short temper.

* Stomach butterflies.

* Poor appetite, or comfort eating snacking.

* Tendency to drink more alcohol, or smoke more.

Causes of anxiety

* Being generally anxious, a bit of a worrier.

* Being poorly prepared.

* You’ve had a bad experience in a previous exam.

* You’re a perfectionist – anything less than an A grade is a failure.

* You’re not feeling well or you’re on medication.

Anxiety reduction

The key to reducing anxiety is to make an early start with your revision. Six weeks should be enough for end of year exams, depending on how many you have, and where you are at in your studies. Take enough time to do yourself justice. Remember revision is just that – it’s about seeing something again and refreshing your knowledge. It’s not about new work. If you have worked at a steady pace throughout the year, revision will be relatively straightforward. If you have less than six weeks available to you be realistic about what you can do. For a start, you only need to know a limited amount, so consult with your tutors who will be able to identify core material. If you feel that stress is seriously going to affect your exams or make your life a misery in the run-up to exams do something about it now.

Plan your revision

* Set aside plenty of time for revision.

* Sift through your notes, essays and reports and focus on essential material.

* Be active: restructure and condense your notes.

Plan answer outlines.

* Rehearse questions you might expect in your exams. The Library and/or your Departments will have copies of previous exam papers.

* Seek help and guidance from tutors if you don’t understand something.

Take proper breaks

* Studying 24/7 will wreck you long before the actual exam.

* Divide the day into three periods of 150 minutes each and revise for two of them. When you are not revising, get well away from your desk.

* Plan one day a week to be completely free of revision.

* Break up your day with other activities. Domestic chores are really useful!

* Be cool and keep to a healthy lifestyle.

* Avoid any substances that promise limitless energy! There’s usually a downside, and revision time is not a good time for experiments.

* Exercise regularly! Find something you enjoy (swimming, jogging, walking or hiking etc.)

* Yoga, tai chi, meditation or techniques for relaxing the mind and body are worth learning.

* Your brain needs energy and also rest. Eat little and often.

* Go for quality food, e.g. wholemeal bread, pasta, nuts, fruit and lots of vegetables.

* Go for quality drinks, e.g. plenty of water and real fruit juice.
