Remembering Freedom Fighters

Himachal still remembers freedom fighters even as it is becoming a ritual now elsewhere. The state government showed its concern towards freedom fighters during a function to honour them at Jwalamukhi. Himachal has always extended assistance to freedom fighters even as their number is continuously shrinking now. The government has shown its gratitude towards freedom fighters by three times  enhancing Samman Rashi and pension of their widows and unmarried daughters. Priorities change during implementation even as families of freedom fighters enjoy many facilities. Ironically, freedom fighters from Himachal are yet to find a place in school curriculum. A proposal for the state level Freedom Fighters Samarak will soon be realised as we have been failing to apprise the importance of freedom struggle to children born after independence. Making freedom fighters as role model for coming generations will be a true tribute to them, otherwise the story would be restricted to extending benefits and beneficiaries. It will also make stories of Himachal’s heroes an integral part of state’s culture. Many agitations and stories of valour are part of state’s history. The country is unaware about Wazir Ram Singh Pathania’s martyrdom much before the revolt by Mangal Pandey against the British. Memorials have not been erected commensurate with valour of freedom fighters and soldiers of this hilly state.Himachal’s heroes should find a place in curriculum from Himachal Pradesh Board of School Education to university level. Governor has also endorsed Himachal’s background to open a military academy here.
