htwThe stage is set for asafoetida (hing) farming in Himachal. Preparations are already on to bring the asafoetida seeds from Mexico. Director at Coffee Board, Commerce and Industry Ministry, Vikram Sharma confirmed that plans are underway for implementing asafoetida farming in the country. Besides this efforts, are also on for pistachio farming. Himachal will become the first state in the country to practice asafoetida and pistachio farming when these plans are implemented.  According to information, Dr. Gulzar had planted few asafoetida plants on trial basis in Kashmir but these could not survive due to extreme climatic conditions. Dr. Vikram Sharma said that the World Bank gave a grant of Rs. 1100 crore to Himachal Pradesh for research and development about three months ago. Out of Rs. 1100 crore, preparations are on to spend Rs. 650 crore on kiwi and strawberry plantation. Experts opine that due to a lack of phosphate in the soil, the kiwi fruit does not develop fully in the state. However, the strawberry is already being produced in large quantity. The climate and geographical conditionals of Himachal Pradesh are perfect for coffee, asafoetida and pistachio production. If produced in in large quantities, they can not only strengthen economy of the hill state but also stop migration of Himachali youth to other states.

Yields High Value In Market

Asafoetida is one such commercial crop that can be grown on any land and its oil fetches Rs. 27,000 to Rs. 35,000 per litre in the market. This crop could become a major source of livelihood for farmers if agrarian community is made aware about benefits of this crop. The positive aspect of this crop is that it is completely safe from wild animals menace.
