Turbulent Himachal Politics

This is regarding Himachal This Week’s cover story of January 21, 2017, “Turbulent Himachal Politics”. Political activities are picking up in this hilly state that goes to polls later this year. Chief Minister Virbhadra Singh is specifically focusing on Kangra district that has 15 assembly seats to accomplish Congress party’s Mission Repeat. Inaugurations and foundation stones of new projects in this politically significant district are indicative of Chief Minister’s priority for this area. The BJP has given the slogan of ‘Mission 50 Plus’ in its bid to regain power. Political activities along with visits of Central leaders in coming months will further raise the political temperature in Himachal.

Revenue Increase

Finance Minister Arun Jaitley has tried to emphasise demonetisation has a favourable impact on country’s economy. He elaborated his point by releasing figures about enhanced collection of taxes post demonetisation. It is also possible that people have deposited taxes in the form of demonetised currency while various economists have expressed that it can adversely affect growth rate.  We believe government’s figures but it remains to be seen whether common people get any benefit through various welfare schemes.
