Himachal This Week

There many established political leaders in Himachal who have not encouraged to carry forward the dynasty politics. These senior leaders who have a long political career are present in both the main political parties, the Congress and Bharatiya Janata Party in this hilly state. As a result, they have provided an opportunity to the second line in hierarchy in parties to pursue their political ambitions. Political observers feel that such leaders are not only nurturing second rung leaders but have also set an example for others to follow.

The first name in this list is of BJP’s two time former chief minister and now Member of Parliament Shanta Kumar whose son is looking after the Hotel Yamini in Palampur. Similarly, IPH Minister Vidya Stokes too doesn’t believe in propagating dynasty politics as her family members have not been active in politics. No family member of former Vidhan Sabha Speaker Late Dharam Pal Thakur is in politics. Son of former Congress MP Narayan Chand Prashar has also stayed away from politics.

Family members of BJP firebrand leaders Jairam Thakur and Dr. Rajeev Bindal have not shown any inclination towards politics. In Mandi district, children of Congress leaders Rangilaram Rao and present CPS Sohan Lal have not pursued dynasty politics. Senior leader and MLA Gulab Singh Thakur has also discouraged dynasty politics.

There are other leaders, including Congress’s Asha Kumari, Mansa Ram and BJP MLA Suresh Bhardwaj, who have discouraged dynasty politics as none of their family members is active in political arena. All these leaders of Congress and BJP are considered as model as they have not furthered the practice of dynasty politics. Political observers feel that sons and daughters of political leaders who have joined politics must have their base among masses besides their consent. However, established politicians staying away from dynasty politics are exemplary in the midst of a debate on dynasty politics at national level.
