Women are no less than men in any field. From being synonymous with the kitchen, they are achieving new milestones in every field hitherto considered to be the domain of men. And Himachali women have also proved this as they have come a long way. The Women’s Day (March 8) has been a symbol of celebrating such women who have surpassed discrimination to come out with flying colours. Let’s celebrate the success of extraordinary talented Himachali women.

Baljeet Kaur: Mountaineer

htwTo climb Mount Everest, the world’s highest peak is not an easy task, but Solan’s 22 years old Baljeet Kaur has proved her mettle by climbing it along with her team last year. For this achievement, she was also honoured by Defence Minister Manohar Parikar recently. Baljeet Kaur, a member of NCC team selected from across the country, had climbed the Mount Everest in May 2016.

Rami Devi: Entrepreneur

htwFrom being a helpless lady as her husband had passed away after just one and a half years of their marriage, the life of Rami Devi of Kullu is an inspiration for all ladies. She became a successful entrepreneur as Rami Devi had no other option to earn  money to raise her daughter. She took to weaving as a career option and now she has completed 20 years in this business thus presenting a perfect picture of women entrepreneurship. Bhuttico has also honoured Rami Devi for her hard work and determination.

Jyotsana Thakur: Martial Arts Expert

htwMartial Arts is another field, where males are dominating. But Jyotsana of Kullu not only learnt it but also won 33 medals in various national and international competitions. Jyotsana told that she always wanted to prove that she can also perform in this male dominated field.

Aditi Thakur: Paraglider

aditiWhen this 15 years old girl took flight in the world famous paragliding site at Bir-Billing, then everybody was astonished and saluted her devotion towards adventure sports. Aditi Thakur from Bir not only registered her name as youngest paraglider in the National Accuracy Paragliding Competition but also got third position in women’s category in this event. There were eight women from across the world who participated in it.

Dev Kanya Thakur: Film Director

htwWhen it comes to convey message, Himachali women used different mediums to reach out to the targeted audience. Dev Kanya Thakur, who started her career with journalism had also got one effective medium to convey her message for women across the world. She made a movie ‘No land for women’, which got recognition not only in the country but also internationally. This film also got awards for its effective subject that touched the untouched area of women’s life.

Seema Thakur: Himachal’s First Woman Driver

seemaBus and taxi driving, a male dominated field had no place for women drivers until Seema entered this profession. Seema from Arki in Solan district can proudly boast of becoming Himachal’s first woman driver in Himachal Road Transport Corporation (HRTC). After learning driving from her father, she undertook a driving test. Driving a 52 seater bus, she proved her skills. Presently, she is driving an HRTC taxi. However, she wants to drive a bus on curvy roads of this hilly state.

Babita Sharma: Forest Guard

babitaWhat would be the biggest inspiration for us than Babita, who not only showed her fearless attitude but also did her duties effectively as a Forest Guard in Forest Department. Deployed in Churdhar Wildlife Sanctuary, Babita stands for anti-poaching. Having expertise in rescue and rehabilitation of wildlife, Babita has also faced attacks from smugglers and wild animals. She also closed three illegally operating sawmills in the area.
