JP Nadda, Asha Kumari Gain Political Stature

Two political leaders from Himachal have gained political stature even as the Bharatiya Janata Party is celebrating its landslide victory in Uttar Pradesh and Uttarakhand while the Congress on return to power in Punjab. The stature of JP Nadda has increased at the national level while Asha Kumari’s political stature too has risen after victory in Punjab where Congress returned to the power after 10 years. Union Health Minister JP Nadda was party affairs in charge in certain areas of Uttarakhand and Uttar Pradesh whereas Asha Kumari had been camping in Punjab for a long period. She was Punjab Congress party affairs in charge jointly with senior party leader Ambika Soni.

They will not only have more say in party matters but also hold more clout in their respective areas, political observers feel, adding that it will not be surprising if these leaders have new political openings in future. The BJP faction owing allegiance to JP Nadda is hoping that he takes over the BJP reins in Himachal amidst reports of his installation as state party president. Similarly, Asha Kumari could also be brought to the fore front. The Congress high command is not in a position to impose its decision in any state after humiliating defeat in Uttar Pradesh and Uttarakhand, political observers point out.

Under the circumstances, it will now be easier for leaders who have performed in Congress ruled states to have their say in the party affairs. The BJP will witness hectic activities in Himachal if high command puts its weight behind JP Nadda. Political observers feel that no leader will be able to oppose the decision as Modi government and party high command have emerged more strong after big victory. It remains to be seen what strategy the BJP adopts before the next general assembly elections in Himachal that goes to polls later this year. Whether Prem Kumar Dhumal, JP Nadda or a new leader will be party’s face in assembly elections? One will have to wait for some time as BJP’s current focus is to win Bhoranj bye-election to retain its strong bastion in Himachal.
