Himachal’s Visionary Leaders

Himachal This Week

The BJP is once again preparing itself in the backdrop of its vision document for Himachal that has witnessed politicking on regionalism, dynasty, employees and other factors. There have been many visionary leaders in Himachal politics but race to the power had sidelined them. However, it is good that the state BJP is linking election manifesto with its vision document, feel political observers. There is organisational difference between the Congress and BJP with the latter positioning itself at a different stage due to its political conduct. There has been no dearth of intellectuals in Congress party also but such wings have reportedly been ignored by the party. Himachal’s leaders had shown vision right from the time of Late YS Parmar who united different principalities and communities for formation of the state. He was also instrumental in merger of Kangra district in Himachal during Punjab’s reorganisation. Present Chief Minister Virbhadra Singh has also been successful in ushering in emotional unity while undertaking development beyond Shimla. His vision resulted in establishing a second capital, a fact that the BJP can’t ignore,  political observers add. Former chief minister Shanta Kumar had instilled discipline, work culture besides harnessing hydro power generation to make Himachal self reliant. Royalty from hydro power projects had been filling the state exchequer, thanks to the vision of Shanta Kumar. Sukh Ram too had his vision to make Himachal digital. Former chief minister Prem Kumar Dhumal changed BJP’s behaviour to stir Congress party’s dominance while presenting the party in a new role and shape in the context of Himachal’s concerns.
