Himachal’s Educational Institutes

One can imagine about Himachal’s potential while looking at the list of top hundred educational institutes released by the Union Human Resource Development Ministry. It doesn’t augur well for educational standards as Himachal Pradesh University could not prove itself. The condition of Central University is also precarious even as other institutes have also slipped from their last year rankings. The only saving grace came in the from of IIT, Mandi, Dr. YS Parmar University of Horticulture and Forestry, Solan, NIT, Hamirpur and Jaypee University, Solan. There was no college to prove its worth even as two or three colleges have been opened in some of the assembly segments. How would Shimla and Palampur universities prove their relevance? Potential of Palampur university is visible in dry farm fields in the state whereas Shimla university is known for black scars of protests. The institutes can not excel at national level if faculty remains busy in politicking. It is a respite that University of Forestry and Horticulture has kept its hopes alive; otherwise only salaries and allowances are hallmark of institutes being run on state resources. It should stir the political class if central University has failed to find a place in top hundred institutes of the country. Politicians should introspect for converting the Central University into a political football. Neglect of this central institute is injustice towards coming generations. Jaypee University and Shoolini University have found a ranking but there is a question mark over quality of education being imparted by other private universities and engineering colleges are imparting to Himachali students. Future of Solan district was explored by opening a series of private universities but it failed to emerge as an educational hub. The government colleges were opened in every nook and corner but at the cost of educational quality. Unnecessary expansion of institutes deprived nearly half a dozen established and historic colleges of the faculty. It is a matter of pride that Himachali students have performed outstandingly in recent exams held by Panjab, Punjabi and Guru Nanak Dev universities. Himachal Pradesh University and Central University of Himachal Pradesh should undertake a survey to know as to why Himachali meritorious students prefer outside universities to pursue higher education.

Thought of the Week

With fools, there is no companionship. Rather than to live with men who are selfish, vain, quarrelsome, and obstinate, let a man walk alone.
