Reforming Jail Inmates

Administrative patronage can change government’s work culture and also life objectives of people. People can have a glimpse of reformative programme undertaken in Kaithu Jail in the form of a Book Cafe in Shimla. It can be taken into account as one another business centre but one has to feel the changing heart palpitation. Certain chapter will be written in the life of convicts through sale of bakery products and books. The cafe portrays a resolve of a new beginning in life and the process will continue in other jails of Himachal. Nahan, Bilaspur, Dharamshala and Shimla jail premises are exploring simple solutions to face challenges in life. The state’s jail administration needs to be appreciated if such initiatives are successful in curbing crime activities in the society. There have been consistent efforts to change life of convicts and many of them have opted alternative path after completing their term in jail. But new initiative’s message is widespread and emotional. Rehabilitation is not easy after serving sentence in jail but this initiative provides a new ray of hope for convicts. They are now being skilled in jails to acquire skills that are always in demand in the society. No one can imagine that jail administration has established a place on The Ridge in Shimla and such initiatives to reform convicts should be encouraged. A ten rupee product is available in any shop but it will provide a certificate of a new life in jail’s bakery. These efforts will bring back convicts to the mainstream life and Shimla’s Book Cafe will certainly write a successful chapter.

Thought of the Week
