Himachal’s Educational Institutes Fail To Impress

htwThe Union Human Resource Development Ministry has released 2017 Indian rankings for educational institutions of the country. The universities based in Himachal Pradesh too registered their presence in the National Institutional Ranking Framework (NIRF) as Indian Institute of Technology in Mandi, National Institute of Technology in Hamirpur; Dr. Y.S. Parmar University of Forestry and Horticulture in Solan; Shoolini University of Biotechnology and Management Sciences in Solan and Jaypee Institute of Information Technologyin Solan managed to find place among top 100. The Indian Rankings 2017 were done under the National Institutional Ranking Framework (NIRF) and performance was assessed in six categories viz. Overall, Universities, Engineering, Management, Pharmacy and Colleges. The educational institutes located in Himachal found place in four categories; Overall, Universities, Engineering and Pharmacy, but failed to make presence in Colleges and Management categories.

A Little Respite

Two Himachali Universities In Overall Category

htwIn overall ranking Indian Institute of Technology, Mandi is ranked at 37 position, while Solan based Dr. Y.S. Parmar University of Horticulture & Forestry is ranked at 84 place. None of other universities, including Central University of Himachal Pradesh, Himachal Pradesh University and private universities, could find a place in top 100 universities in the nation. Indian Institute of Science, Bangalore topped the overall list followed by IIT, Chennai and IIT, Bombay at second and third place respectively.

Two Universities in Top 100

Dr. Y.S Parmar Horticulture and Forestry University, Solan with 39.54 points has been ranked 51 and Jaypee University of Information Technology, Solan ranked 93 with 34.14 points. Indian Institute of Science, Bangalore emerged as the top ranked university as per NIRF rankings followed by Jawaharlal Nehru University, New Delhi and Banaras Hindu University, Varanasi at second and third position respectively.

IIT Mandi At 28th Rank In Engineering Category

htwIndian Institute of Technology, Mandi ranked 28, National Institute of Technology (NIT), Hamirpur 59 and Jaypee University of Information Technology, Solan ranked 83 among top hundred engineering institutes of the country.  Indian Institute of Technology (IIT), Madras grabbed the top spot in this category followed by IIT, Bombay and IIT, Kharagpur at second and third position respectively.

Shoolini University Ranked In Pharmacy

Shoolini University of Biotechnology and Management Sciences, Solan with 37.45 points ranked at 39. Jamia Hamdard with 73.64 points topped the list followed by National Institute of Pharmaceutical Education and Research, Mohali and University Institute of Pharmaceutical Sciences Chandigarh at second and third position respectively.

Eight Universities Applied For NIFR Rankings

Eight universities of Himachal applied for National Institutional Ranking Framework ranking in universities category. These include

*           Himachal Pradesh University, Shimla

*           Central University of Himachal Pradesh

*          AP Goyal University, Shimla

*          Arni University, Indora

*          Career Point University, Hamirpur

*          Dr. Y.S Parmar Horticulture and Forestry University, Solan

*           Jaypee University of Information Technology, Solan

*          Shoolini University of Biotechnology and Management Sciences, Solan Five educational institutes of the country have found place in NIFR rankings. These include three universities and two engineering institutes.

HPU Not In List

Himachal Pradesh University, Shimla despite acquiring A Grade from NAAC failed to mark its position at any rank in the National Institutional Ranking Framework. The HPU last year gave the logic of not applying for the same. However, HPU this year had applied for NIFR rankings but failed to feature in overall top 100 institutes as well as in top 100 universities category.

Drop In Rankings of Institutes

The engineering institutes located in Himachal Pradesh has witnessed a fall in rankings in 2017 as compared to 2016 rankings. IIT, Mandi ranking has fallen from 20th rank in 2016 to 28th rank in 2017. Besides this, NIT, Hamirpur has also witnessed a drop in ranking. It was ranked 51 in 2016 but it ranked 59 in 2017. Jaypee University, Solan rank has also dropped from 37 in 2016 to 93 in 2017.

Only One College Applied For NIFR Ranking

In College category none of the colleges of Himachal Pradesh got place in the top 100 colleges in the nation. Miranda House, Delhi with 69.39 points has been ranked 1st and Loyola College of Chennai and Shri Ram College of Commerce, Delhi were ranked second and third respectively. Two colleges of neighboring Chandigarh viz. Post Graduate Government College for Girls has been ranked at 32nd position and Goswami Ganesh Dutta S.D. College, Chandigarh at 41th position and Mehar Chand Mahajan D.A.V. College for Women Sec 36, Chandigarh placed at 76th position. What is interesting that colleges of Himachal did not show any interest to apply for the NIFR rankings. Out of 119 colleges in the state, only one college, Swami Vivekananda Government College, Ghumarwin applied for the NIFR ranking.

No Institute In Management Category

None of the university of Himachal Pradesh has found a place in the management category. However, Indian Institutes of Management Ahmedabad, Banglore and Calcutta ranked first second and third respectively.
