htwPeople in large numbers gathered to celebrate a fair in Baggi village of Banjar Valley with religious fervour. The fair is dedicated to the chief deity of the region, Shringa Rishi with several other deities of the region also participating in the celebrations. Idol of Shringa Rishi was carried from his original abode, Skeeran Jot as devotees danced on the tunes of local instruments. Every year dancing devotees starve for penance, and only after the idol is brought to Baggi, they eat a feast. Main attraction of the fair was the night dance where devotees held hands in a chain and performed ‘Seraji Naati’, folk dance of the Banjar region. With this sacred fair, people got an opportunity to purchase different items. While utensils, seasonal foods, spices and clothes were important trade items, local handicrafts of the region were also attractions for tourists.

htwHimachali culture and traditions are incomplete without the mention of Kulluvi caps which remained an integral part of rich dev sanskriti (deity tradition). Kulluvi attires are popular around the globe and many designers try to follow the designs of Kulluvi attires. Recently, Sunita Bali, a renowned textile designer presented her handicrafts and Kulluvi attires in an exhibition organised at Roerich Art Gallery, Naggar. Sunita holds a fellowship from Textile Ministry, Delhi and she experimented with local Kullu attires including Kulluvi shawl. The exhibition attracted locals as well as tourists, who were astonished to see new experiments in the traditional Kulluvi shawls and handicrafts. She said that her handicrafts would be an inspiration for local designers. Her work was also appreciated by students of Helena Art School. Kulluvi shawls, caps and dresses have already made a name globally, but according to Sunita, these little experiments would also help these items to be popular among masses.
