Dental Care

This week the dental expert is telling you about toothbrush, paste and myths about it.

Tooth Brush

htw* Don’t use brush with hard bristles, it does not make your teeth white but can damage tooth surface and gums.

* Use medium to soft brush. Better to consult your dentist before selecting brush for your teeth.

* Some people use wooden sticks for brushing, it is better to use brush instead of wooden sticks because wooden sticks cannot clean inter-dental space and many cause exercise pressure on teeth and gums.

* Use of tongue cleaner is also recommended for good oral hygiene.

* Improper tooth-brushing can cause tooth cavity, gum diseases and tooth loss.

Tooth Paste

* Generally all available tooth pastes in the market are good. You can choose anyone.

* In hypersensitive teeth, one can use tooth paste with fluoride (called medicated tooth pastes).

* Some time even after use of medicated paste, sensitiveness persists, in that case, consult your dentist, you may need some filling or gums treatment.

* Proper brushing techniques are more important than any tooth paste.

Myths About Brushing

htw* More hard brush-more white teeth; its not so, don’t use hard brush.

* During pregnancy, some women avoid tooth-brushing. Brush your teeth twice regularly even during pregnancy. Due to hormonal changes, gums become soft and spongy. There can be gums bleeding, so use soft brush with normal paste. Don’t stop brushing, consult your dentist, if problem persists.

* Use of powered toothbrush; powered tooth brushes are useful for disable or hospitalised persons.

* Don’t visit your dentist only in tooth pain. Instead, visit a dentist once in every six months.
