Dr. Rajesh K. Chauhan Music free society can never be a civilised and prosperous. The study of developed and rich ancient civilisations prove that music education was mandatory for a civilised society. In ancient India, music related education of higher level was imparted in various streams in Takshila and Nalanda University. Even in the present context, music education is compulsory in almost all developed countries.

Music education is started in childhood in Japan as its knowledge is necessary here for girls in order to get married. Greater impetus to music education is given in West Bengal and South India also. Music has a deep link with mathematics and physical sciences too. It has a positive impact on human mind during difficult conditions and helps in physical, mental and moral development of a child. Renowned scientist and Nobel Prize winner Albert Einstein used to play violin during travel and listen to Mozart’s music in free time. Famous mathematician and physicist Satyendra Nath Bose was a fan of Lalit kala and music. His friends used to say that Bose room always had a music instrument named israaj besides books and pictures of famous scientists Einstein and Raman pasted on walls.

His love for music  was spread over a vast area from Indian to Western music. It has a positive impact not only on humans but also affects birds and animals. Shedding its poisonous nature, snakes too dance on the tunes of venu naad. Music power is used in Holland while milking cows. The government here has made such an arrangement that melodious music should be played during milking cows. It has so much effect of their their nervous system that they yield 15 to 20% more milk. This experiments are carried out in India too.

Music education is necessary from school level and a musical start in morning assembly is need of every school. Cultural programmes, annual and prize distribution functions of schools are incomplete without music. It can change the monotonous atmosphere of classroom teaching. Himachal government has tried to give a booster dose to music by creating thirty posts of Assistant Professor, vocal and instrumental and fifty seven posts of tabla assistant. This move of the government has rekindled a hope of bright and musical future among thousand of music teachers and students. We hope that soon music will begin in all the educational institutes, including schools, in the state in future.
