htwBaddi Barotiwala Nalagarh Development Authority (BBNDA) is going to take a big initiative to facilitate migrant labourers struggling to find a roof over their head in the industrial area. The authority BBNDA working on a project to provide cheap and safe residences to migrant labourers. Under the plan, it is proposed to construct 1000 residences at a cost of Rs. 10 crore in the first phase for which 65 beeghas of land has been identified at Morepen road in Baddi. BBDNA CEO Aditya Negi has sent a proposal in this regard to the state government for approval.  Notably, tricity BBN is slowly converting to a city of slums. Be it government land or private one, the spread of slums is similar in both the cases in the area. This is not all. The process of settling migrant labourers in slum dwellings illegally on private land on rent is also going on unabatedly with the administration adopting an indifferent attitude toward this practice. Most of the industries barring few do not provide residence facility to workers. As a result, they have to live in slums despite unsafe conditions. The recent incident at Suraj Majra Gujran area in Baddi is also an example of unsafe settlement of workers. However the BBNDA has proposed to construct residences for migrant workers on low cost housing model and provide these residences equipped with basic infrastructures to migrant labourers at cheap rate.  BBDNA CEO Aditya Negi told Himachal This Week that the authority is working on the project of constructing 1000 cheaper residences for migrant workers.

Locals Not Interested

BBN Development Authority had started a low cost house model scheme for makeover of slums last year. Under the scheme, private land owners will construct cheap and safe houses in their land to provide them to migrant workers. But locals did not show much enthusiasm for this scheme.

20,000 Slum Dwellings In Baddi

More than 70 slums have been identified in the BBN area where about 20,000 slum dwellings are established. Lakhs of migrant labourers, termed as backbone of industries, reside in unsafe conditions.

Gifting A Plant As Shagun

htwThe most potent threats that are worrying the environmentalists across the world is global warming and climate change. And answer to this threat is more plantation of trees. The question is who will do it? And the answer is every person can contribute a bit to save the planet Earth. A family from Hamirpur district in Himachal has taken a unique initiative in this perspective.      Head of the family, instead of giving money in the form of shagun during marriage or other functions, gifts a plant to the family. Same gift is given by him even during birthday celebrations. The family till now has gifted many dozens of plants in the form of shagun. The family is linked to the initiative of environment conservation for last five years. Kids in the family look after the plants planted by father. They in fact have taken over the responsibility of taking care of about 150 plants planted near house. This unique method of environment conservation has been devised by Balwant Singh Babli, a resident of Jol village in Hamirpur district. His wife Manjula Devi, a anganwari worker is helping Balwant in his environment conservation drive. She loves planting new variety of plants and taking care of old one whenever she gets free time. Balwant Singh told Himachal This Week that earlier he planned to carry environment conservation drive on his own. But later on, he changed his approach. He said that, “In the initial days, I used to think how to take help of others in saving environment. And after a lot of brain storming came with the conclusion to start the initiative from my own relatives.” First time when I gifted a plant as a shagun instead of money to my relative, everyone in the family was surprised. But later everyone agreed with my thought, added Balwant. He told that he does not pick any special variety of plant for plantation, but any random plant from jungle suffice in his campaign. The main motive of this initiative is environment conservation. He told that forests are shrinking fast because of cutting of trees which is leading to the pollution in environment. Human race will fall in grip of various diseases if life giving trees in the form of oxygen will keep shrinking at this pace. He told that his father is a retired army men and mother is a house wife. Whole family helped him in his this noble initiative.

Seeks Public Cooperation

Balwant Singh told that he carried out a plantation drive on June 5, 2017, on the occasion of environment day and planted saplings at panchayat ghar, anganwari centre and Primary School, Palahi on that day.  These places witness extensive movement of employees during daytime. He asked for cooperation from the public and said that these plants can survive if watered from time to time.
