newsThree girls of Kangra district have brought laurels to the state by winning seven medals in the Grand Inter-State Goju Ryu Karate Championship. Mukesh Thakur from Balh Valley, who was the PSO of MS Dhoni has trained these players including Sajna, Seema and Shobha from Loharari village in Kangra district. Hailing from a sleepy village, even odd situations couldn’t deter them from learning karate. In the 12-13 years age category, Sajna bagged silver medal, while in the same category, Seema secured bronze medal. Shobha, in the 11 years age category won bronze medal. Apart from these brilliant girls, Ravi Thakur from Chhota Bhangal also took part in the championship and won a bronze medal in 15 years age category. These players have also won medal in the team category thus putting seven medals in their kitty. Mukesh Thakur had served in Grenadier Regiment in Indian Army and in NSG as Black Cat Commando. He is enthusiastic to teach karate to other students as well.

Four Himachali Girls For Junior National Hockey Camp

newsHimachal girls have outperformed boys as four hockey players of Him Hockey have been selected for the national camp. The camp will be held by the Sports Authority of India at Bengaluru from June 30 to July 3. Notably, no boy from the state has been selected for the camp. Women junior players are: Vajinder Kaur (goalkeeper); Antim and Umra (defenders) and Manju (midfielder). Selection was made after an action packed domestic season, which witnessed some outstanding performances in the Hockey India 7th Junior National Hockey Championship for women. Hockey India has selected a group of 53 men and 37 women hockey players in the making for the national camp.

In the camp, further talent will be gauged who can represent the country in the junior category for the upcoming international tournaments. With their vision set on the 2020 junior world cup (men and women), Hockey India vies to create a strong pool of hockey players. The probables include players from this year’s national hockey champions. After overwhelming performances by players across various states, Hockey India selection committee had named the probables with an aim to develop a strong pool of players who can go on to represent the country under the purview of Hockey India High Performance. “The young players will be put through a 5-week strenuous camp which will focus on basics, strength and conditioning and team building activities,” said Md. Mushtaque Ahmed, Secretary General, Hockey India.

Athletes Run For Fitness

Himachal This Week, Solan

newsOn the Global Running Day, Himachal Athletics Association organised a half marathon in Solan in which 548 athletes from across North India including 354 men and 194 women participated. The event was flagged off by Health Minister Kaul Singh Thakur. Athletes from Himachal, Punjab, Chandigarh, Haryana and Delhi took part in the half marathon including Commanding Officer of Army in Solan, Om Veer Singh. In the 20 plus men category,  Satyender Singh topped the chart, while Tej Bahadur and Pradeep clinched the second and third spots respectively. In women category, Gurpreet Kaur and Meenakshi have secured the first two slots respectively. Rajesh Kumar, Om Dutt and Suneel Kumar bagged first three positions in the 40 plus half marathon. In the 60 plus 5km race, Om Prakash was declared winner, whereas, Jagdeep Singh Sidhu and Parma Ram remained on the second and third positions. School students have also participated in the race in which, Arish a 1st class student clinched the top position in 100 metres race followed by Aditya Raj for Second spot. In girls category, Jahnvi was adjudged winner. In the 12.5 km team event, Boys Senior Secondary School, Solan remained winner followed by Senior Secondary School, Kotho and Senior Secondary School, Kotla for second and third positions respectively.
