Shimla Paints Congress In Shambles

Himachal This Week

The BJP won first time in last thirty years where the Congress had virtual monopoly of power in Shimla Municipal Corporation (SMC). We had forecast in previous column the Congress has not matched the campaign and readiness of BJP that is bound to hit its performance. Finally, Shimla shows the trend and mood of the people of the state. But what was disappointing in whole affair of election that Chief Minister Virbhadra Singh was fighting virtually alone battle.

The organisation of Congress failed miserably to support him and even his Cabinet colleagues did not look enthusiastic. He was rightly taking pride that he alone could manage to get 12 seats which is one more than last time. But it also showed his failure or perhaps inability to command the organisation to match his efforts with BJP, political observers feel. On the contrary, entire BJP was on its toes and closely monitored by former chief minister Prem Kumar Dhumal. Why the Congress chief and his leaders of the party could not render similar support to the Chief Minister is not understandable. Whatever the reason this does not augur well for the Congress in forthcoming elections, political observers add.

On the ground again, the BJP is getting geared up for the assembly elections. There is no quibbling in the party as shown in Kangra where an associate of the party inaugurates a building one day before it is scheduled opening by Transport Minister G.S. Bali. It only shows bitter one man upship on leadership of Kangra. Similarly dissonance of voices between party leader Ram Lal and its legislature Bhambar Thakur on mining mafia operation, are not contributing to the right climate within the party and good image to the public. Such problem are in the party in most of the districts and no one is mending the fences. The party organization seems to be in tatters and it is high time that steps are taken to set it right. To find alibis or such comforting thoughts that there was no Modi wave is closing your eyes to the future are not going to help as whatever the justification it is first time that BJP, which lost the power game in Shimla for three decades, has ousted the Congress.
