What happened in Shimla in gang rape and murder of a school girl is not only disgraceful but also a shame for the law and order authorities. Understandably, it has led to high political voltage disruptions in public protest with political parties joining it. Surprisingly, two estranged parties like Bharatiya Janata Party and CPI Marxist joined in pinning down the government.
The government made its situation worse reportedly by uttering casual remarks and not acting swiftly to handle the fire which was being ignited by the political parties. No doubt, there was public ire in general but nonchalant attitude of the state government too added fuel to the fire, political observers feel. The police was certainly lax in launching hunt for the criminals and even today do not know how the body was found in the forest when there was no damage by the wild animals for two days.
Even the Congress party president found fault with the police. It became clear that not only the opposition but also inside the ruling party there was chaos. Public in general is getting fed up with yatras; whether by the BJP or the Congress. However, the Congress in its reactive politics is trying hard to give a fitting reply to what the BJP described as a successful expose of the failure of the state government. Ironically, when the Congress party is pedaling path-yatra, there are massive anti-government demonstrations going on in Shimla and many other towns in the state for failure of legal measures to get culprits.
Public wrath can be judged from Himachal This Week survey which shows 87% of respondents castigating the police for failing to handle the case properly. The question that political parties are raising relate to the lack of governance and breakdown of law and order situation. It is bound to grow and become the major issue in the forthcoming elections, add political observers.
