Himachali Gifts

Himachal hogged limelight due to a package of gifts delivered to White House in America as it contained Kangra tea, Kullu shawl, Mandi’s bracelet, and herbal honey. Himachali products got priority due to Prime Minister Narendra Modi’s influence. Himachali products have never been packaged and branded like this even as they have been used on various occasions. The list of gifts can become longer to show state’s cultural existence. But what are we doing for conservation and promotion for these products linked with weavers, tea garden owners, traditional ornament manufacturers and honey producers. Such products will flourish more if concerted efforts are put in to conserve them in hilly state. Many corporates benefited by exploiting honey producers who are fighting for their existence. Declining tea production and illegal sale of tea gardens have broken backbone of this sector that is looking for central help. A chaiwala is again strengthening his connection with Himachal if Narendra Modi has preferred Kangra tea over that from Darjeeling and Kerala state. Every Himachali can feel proud about it but Union Ministries will think about providing some forestland for tea, coffee, herbs and medicinal plants cultivation. Forest policy can conserve such species of vegetation that are useful for honey production. Manufacturing of traditional ornaments and other artifacts are looking for government’s patronage. Prime Minister has set the stage for Himachali products and many Union ministries can further strengthen and promote state’s products. The state is definitely being reflected in Centre’s thinking in the run up to upcoming assembly elections. Atal Behari Vajpayee’s connection with Prini in Kullu translated into a tunnel to Lahaul & Spiti and now last phase of Leh-Manali rail link survey is underway. It is politically ripe time to understand Himachal.
