htwHimachal government has provided a big relief to small power producers of the capacity of 100 kilowatt. The aftereffects of this decision will be visible in near future as about 1000 such small power projects are expected to be established in Himachal. According to sources, the Ministry of New and Renewable Energy has approved 85 small power projects for this hill state. At present more than 800 small power projects are functioning in Himachal that are generating up to 100 KW of electricity here. The state electricity board under its power policy in the past had taken a decision not to buy electricity from these power producers, which the state government now has changed. Earlier electricity generated by such power producers was reserved for captive use, which was not possible. Therefore the state government has taken a decision that state electricity board will purchase electricity from these power producers. This decision from state government will provide big relief to small power producers. Himalaya Power Producer Association has recently raised this issue in front of Additional Chief Secretary Energy Tarun Sridhar in a seminar. The association told additional chief secretary that state electricity board has imposed a ban and not purchasing electricity from them. In such a scenario where will they sell the electricity generated, they asked. The decision now has been taken in this perspective signalling a big relief for small power producers.

Small Projects Useful During Monsoon

These small power projects established on khads will prove useful for state electricity board during monsoon period when power production in big hydropower projects usually scales down considerably due to silt accumulation. However these small power projects generate electricity even during monsoon session that helps electricity board to provide uninterrupted supply to consumers. Member of  Himalaya Power Producer Association Amarnath Kaushal said that the problems of small power producers was raised in front of state government that has reciprocated positively.
