htwThis week, the dental expert is telling us about Root Canal Treatment (RCT)

RCT

RCT is Root Canal Therapy or Treatment. Few years back if someone had toothache with or without pus or swelling, they used to visit dentist for extracting tooth without thinking about to preserve it. Now, there are materials and equipments which help to avoid extraction of tooth and save it, RCT is one of them. Dentist, who is specialised in RCT is known as endodontist.

Which Tooth Need RCT?

If tooth decay (cavity) spread up to pulp (chamber in side tooth which have nerves

and blood vessels), then it can’t be treated with simple filling, these cases require RCT. Patients may feel sensitivity, pain and even swelling. Some times pus drain out through decayed tooth opening or through adjacent gums.

Procedure Of RCT

In RCT, the pulp is accessed by dental drilling machine and the pulp is removed by specialised pins like instruments (broaches). Then the canals of roots are widened and cleaned thoroughly by other instruments. Finally a filling material Gutta-percha is placed in these canals. The tooth is then restored with filling or artificial crown.

Time Taken For RCT

Generally RCT is a multi visit procedure. One has to visit dentist 4-5 times with a gap of 2 to 3 days to complete RCT. But now-a-days single visit RCT is also being done in routine.
