It is difficult for the Congress to win a war of words with the Bharatiya Janata Party as party’s organisation is not visible to counter opposition’s ideology in this hilly state. It is for Himachal Congress to decide whether its organisation or government would reply to the direct questions asked by the BJP. It is another matter that Congress is trying to reunite itself to face the upcoming political battle against the BJP.
The BJP’s Sambit Patra unveiled party’s four pronged campaign strategy against Congress in Shimla and the campaign would continue until September 20. In a bid to oust Congress from the power in Himachal, the BJP has chosen to directly attack Chief Minister conduct, thus giving an indication that next assembly election would be fought on these issues. Having failed to achieve ‘Mission Repeat’ during last assembly elections in 2012, every political move would be watched curiously if the BJP considers it to be a fight against Virbhadra Singh, political observers feel.
The BJP workers are doing ground work whereas the Congress is reportedly setting its house in order. Experience of Central BJP leaders is visible as they are firing salvos to raise issues through ‘Hisaab Mange Himachal’ campaign against Congress. Four press conferences from Shimla to Dharamshala will pose questions on Congress’s five year rule in this hilly state.
Virbhadra government is riding on development plank even as it has taken certain very important and nearly impossible decision besides some unnecessary one’s, political observers point out. Whatever might be the outcome of the polls but one thing is certain that BJP wants to run election campaign according to its suitability. It is trying to establish accountability of the Virbhadra government on certain issues. Nonetheless political temperature will definitely increase in coming days in the run up to general assembly elections.
