India has remained an agrarian country. According to a 1951 survey, 80% population of India was linked with agricultural related works while rest 20% population was dependent on other professions. However the strength of people linked with agriculture and animal husbandry reduced to a great extent after independence when India made rapid strides in technology and other professions. Now conditions has deteriorated has to such an extent that parents don’t want their kids to choose agriculture or animal husbandry as a profession.

In fact they are being perceived as low grade jobs in India. What is surprising that youth are ready to face unemployment or do a lowly paid private job, but considers it a disgrace to adopt self dependent profession like agriculture. Even the students who are not that much good in studies have no interest in agricultural work. They too want a desk job, private or preferably government one. Ask any kid what is his objective in life? The answer will be the same old crammed one – doctor, engineer, advocate or defence personnel etc. But not a single child among thousands wants to be a farmer, a profession that yields grains which is most necessary for human survival.

Everyone wants milk, curd, ghee or butter on breakfast table but no one want to practice animal husbandry. Here a logical argument can be given that only those people who have agricultural land or spare land could think of adopting agriculture and animal husbandry as a profession. How a landless can think of adopting it as a profession? The answer lies in a famous saying that nothing is impossible for a desirous heart. Practising agriculture on land taken on lease from a big landholder can prove beneficial. Similarly animal husbandry can be done profitably by purchasing fodder. What is ironical that the big land holders are also not encouraging their kids to adopt agriculture or animal husbandry as a profession. People will be encouraged to adopt these professions if society views them with an honour.

Today’s generation parents does not allow their kids to even touch the soil and considers it ill manners of child. However 40 years ago, soil and crop fields were the playgrounds of children. The hard work and sweat put in by kids there used to develop high resistance against diseases among them. The things however at present are totally opposite. Most of the time of present generation goes in high tech gadgets and internet. Its negative effects on mind and health of kids is amply visible. It is necessary to develop habit of physical work among kids so that they remain fit, healthy and develops high resistance against diseases. We could have health food on our disposal only when we will adopt and give respect to agriculture and animal husbandry profession.
