Going Back To The Future With Gurukul Education

Mumukshu K. Thakur

Yes, not past, but its like going back to the future. And we need not any sort of Hollywood’s cinematic time machine to enter into future in accordance with glorious past of Vedic era of our nation. Gurukuls (schools of Sanskrit language,  literature and holy scriptures teaching) may well serve the purpose. How eventful, fantastic and blissful it would be, if our India enters into successive decades of 21st century while embracing latest developments of science and technology in one hand and with vedic knowledge in the other hand. Himachal Pradesh is blessed to have one such centre functioning in Chamba district.

Self-maintained discipline is one of the salient features of ‘Gurukul education’. And one such Gurukul was established in 2015 at the calm and serene village namely Chameenu, situated on the right bank of rivulet Saal (major tributary to river Ravi), 12 kilometers from district head-quarter Chamba town. This Gurukul was created and established by the blessings, cooperation and help of world famous spiritual teacher, preacher and philanthropist Shri Shri Ravi Shankar (Art of Living fame). The renowned spiritual Guru popular across maximum significant nations of the world had selected this region and place for the noble purpose.

Himachal should have good reason to feel proud and blessed, as this Gurukul is the only one of its kind in entire north India. Students here are taught Sanskrit language and literature, holy scriptures of Sanatan Dharma along with all modern subjects like Science, Mathematics, English, Hindi, social-sciences and other subjects.

Its really heartening to witness the students, Principal and teachers to speak and converse with each other in Sanskrit language. The atmosphere and ambience inside Gurukul provides very calm and soothing feelings to be cherished for a very long while. Vedic-shlokas written on the walls almost everywhere, everyone wearing 100% traditional Indian attire/clothes and costumes, chanting of vedic-mantras by teachers and students (disciples) takes us back into the glorious vedic era of historic prosperous India. All students and teachers not only learn and follow, but they very much live the Hindu/ Sanatan ways of living.

Though every possible effort is being done to provide employment to students in the specific field of teachings and spreading worldwide the knowledge of religious and spiritual scriptures. “Even if these disciples do not get immediate sources of livelihood, at least, this is for sure that Gurukuls are there to add much better humans to our nation in particular and to the entire world as a whole”, opines Arun Sharma, principal of the Gurukul. With comprehensive learning and having developed feelings of love, care, compassion for all humans and creatures, the boys passing out from Gurukuls will definitely make this world a better place.
