Himachal This Week, Shimla

The state government has earned more than Rs. 900 crore from sale of electricity this year. These are only initial figures as per information gathered by the energy department. Some more money is expected to come from sale of electricity this year. However the electricity production has reduced to almost half in hydropower units functioning in Himachal that has hurt state government’s earning directly. According to sources, the state government has made Rs. 50 crore more this year by selling its share of electricity as compared to previous year. And that despite the fact that price of electricity has reduced in the market at present. The government has outsourced the job of electricity sale that will provide them the detailed information by end of the financial year. But for now, the figures clearly reflect profit for the government. About one thousand million units of Himachal’s share of electricity has been sold until now this year, said sources. However the production in hydropower units in the state has dropped to half, so revenue from sale of electricity has also decreased correspondingly. The electricity production has decreased in both the private and government projects and the situation will continue till April next year. With the dawn of winters in the hill state, the demand of electricity too has increased in here. Therefore the board has started the process of taking back the electricity given to other states. The board has in fact been getting the banked electricity supply from October 15 that could witness more surge from November 1.
