Himachal This Week

Both the Congress and Bharatiya Janata Party find themselves in a piquant situation following announcement of dates for Himachal assembly elections by Election Commission of India. The reason is that parties hardly have few days to finalise their candidates for the upcoming elections. Filing of nominations begins from October 16 and the last date for withdrawal of nominations is October 24.

Notably, the number of aspiring candidates to contest assembly elections has tremendously increased in both the Congress and BJP. As a result, both the main political parties fear undercutting and rebel candidates in upcoming elections, political observers point out. Sources said that both the parties have finalised about 30 to 35 candidates until now and consensus is yet to be evolved on rest of the seats.

The Congress is yet to hold a meeting of its election committee. The BJP held a meeting a couple of days ago at Naina Devi but no consensus could be evolved on names of party candidates. Sources said that leaders of both the parties are trying to hold meetings in Delhi before October 16 to finalise tickets.

Immediately after the announcement of election dates, Himachal Pradesh Congress Committee president Sukhwinder Sukhu talked to Chief Minister Virbhadra Singh and party’s state affairs in charge Sushil Kumar Shinde. The BJP state president Satpal Satti also held discussions with state party affairs in charge Mangal Pandey who was already in Shimla.
