Himachal This Week

Polling for Himachal assembly elections will be held on November 9 but the state will witness a long period of uncertainty till the counting is held on December 18. All developmental activities come to a standstill during the long period of model code of conduct imposed during elections, feel Political observers.  Questions are also being raised over the necessity of Himachal’s wait for over a month for the election results because elections will also be held in Gujarat during this period. Different election dates for Gujarat are understandable but the schedule for assembly elections is not truly reflective of prevailing climatic conditions in this hilly state. Though climate can be an issue but it is not like that Himachal experiences heavy snowfall after November 9 and the polling has to be completed before that. Nonetheless, Himachal has to move ahead as per model code of conduct till the time election process is also complete in Gujarat. Election Commission of India has added new facilities in the electoral process despite peaceful environment and good conduct by people of this hilly state. VVPAT will ensure electorate that their vote has been registered correctly besides new experiments linked with information technology to ensure transparent, free and fair polls. The commission has also lauded system put in place by the state government to add new voters in Himachal where two polling booths in every assembly constituency will be regulated by women. Though, it is difficult to assess but all eyes will be on use of social media in campaigning. Elections in Himachal have always been revolutionary as views and issues play important role for a political change here. Virbhadra Singh will also face toughest battle of his political career in upcoming assembly elections as he has been named chief ministerial candidate by AICC vice president Rahul Gandhi, political observers point out.
