Gobind Sagar Lake is a popular tourist destination in Himachal. The Gobind Sagar Sanctuary is popularly visited by the adventure seekers and nature lovers. It is an artificial lake, which is a direct outcome of world famous Bhakra Dam on the Sutlej River. It is 90 km long and encompasses an area of approximately 170 sq. km. Harvey Slocum was the mastermind behind the successful design and work of this lake. To maintain the level of water, the flow of the river Beas is channeled to the Gobind Sagar, by the Beas-Sutlej Link that was completed in 1976. Though a power generation unit, the lake is also the host of various water sports. Tourists can enjoy water-skiing, sailing, Kayaking and water-scooter racing on the turf of Gobind Sagar. Fishing is a regular activity here and more than fifty species and sub-species can be seen in the water. Named after the 10th Guru (Teacher of Sikh community) – Guru Gobind Singh, the lake becomes more popular during winters. The surroundings of the lake reflect the true beauty of Himalayan ranges. The lush green mountains surround the lake and the river definitely add greatly to its beauty. The nearby destinations around the Gobind Sagar Lake comprise of Anandpur Sahib. This holy place is 83 kms from here. The place is of vital importance for the Sikh people, as Guru Teg Bahadur established it.

Water Sports in Gobind Sagar Lake

In October and November, when the water level of the reservoir is high, a series of regattas are also organized by the Tourism and Civil Aviation department. Water-skiing, sailing, kayaking and water scooter racing are popular water sports activities during this period. Major attractions of the lake include ferry rides and water sports like speed-boating.

Popular for Fishing

Gobind Sagar Lake is very famous for fishing; the fish in Gobind Sagar is one of the freshest and tastiest. Gobind Sagar Lake has about fifty one species and sub species of fish, which is supplied to bigger markets in Chandigarh & Delhi. Labeo dero, Tor pitutrata, Mystus seenghala and Mirror carp are some of the common species found here.

How to Reach

By Road: The Gobind Sagar Lake is well connected by roads and can be easily accessed from the town of Bilaspur. Gobind Sagar Wildlife Sanctuary is connected by a rope-way; the shrine of Naina Devi overlooks the Gobind Sagar.

By Train: The nearest broad gauge railway station is at Una (Himachal) and nearest narrow gauge railway station is at Shimla.

By Air: Chandigarh and Bhuntar are the nearest airports, located at 135-km and 131-km from Una.
