Drugs menace is the biggest problem of this century. It is spreading its roots fast in the country and the increasing tendency of drug addiction prevailing among youth for the last few years in Himachal has emerged as a subject of worry for the state government and society. Youth is our biggest strength and we are emerging as a big economic power on the basis of this force. But our enemy nations are conspiring against our young force and making them addicted of drugs leaving this force useless. The biggest worrying factor is that drugs are being enforced into our nation by our neighbouring countries and our government and administration has failed to keep a check on it. Punjab is a lively example of this. The seriousness of the situation can well be gauged from the fact that drugs consumption has reached even to school level. To add to this problem is the easy availability of drugs in the market.

The youth initially consumes these hallucinatory objects on hobby basis but soon it becomes habit and they falls into drugs peddling and anti social work. Most of the accused caught by police on charges of drug peddling are youth. Their statements given to police shows that they started consumption of drugs on hobby basis and fell into vicious trap of drugs peddling once they become habitual of it. Besides alcohol, there are many others drugs like marijuana, charas, ganja cocaine, heroine etc that youth are consuming in present times. It needs to be identified as who are these people who provide these products to school and college going students and they should be punished accordingly. A drug addicted person does not hesitate to commit any heinous crime, be it loot, murder or rape. Therefore such a person is dangerous to a family and entire society. The biggest reason behind falling into drug trap is easy availability and bad company.

A simple, sober and cultured child can also fell in this vicious trap if he or she has a bad company. Here negligence of parents is also seen. The working parents in this fast paced life fails to give full attention and time to their kids and comes to know off the situation only after it had gone out of hand. A little time and attention from parents could help in keeping their children away from this menace. They should ensure a healthy discussion with their kids at least once in a day and refrain from putting in unnecessary impediments in front of them.  There are a number of laws made for checking drugs peddling, but complete check on this drug menace can be ensured only by creating awareness among youth of its ill effects. The police department too should strengthen its vigilance in order to put a curb on this menace.
