Himachal This Week

The elections were held in Himachal in the midst of silence maintained by the voters. The campaigning also focused around old points and issues including caste and communities. There were other leaders also in the race for top post apart from Virbhadra Singh. The debate was subverted and real issues were pushed to the backstage. Rahul Gandhi focused on Himachal versus Gujarat model of development but the state Congress could not capitalise on this issue.

The BJP worked hard during canvassing but could not succeed to create a wave in favour of the party. Virbhadra toured every nook and corner of the state notwithstanding the fact that slogans were raised during Bali’s rally. The BJP’s campaign changed political enthusiasm but workers turned into leaders. There was a confusion about its chief ministerial candidate but ultimately the party threw its weight behind Prem Kumar Dhumal. Himachal felt humiliated when electioneering revolved around topics like devils and termite. National leaders tried to woo Himachalis but none could understood electorate of this hilly state. The concerns about Rohtang embroiled in NGT and Forest Conservation Act were not raised during electioneering.

No leader cared about the condition of unemployed  and dam oustees besides monkey menace in Himachal. The BJP campaigned extensively but elections result will reveal whether Congress was able to improve its position or not. The results will also reflect prevalence of Modi factor in this hilly state as the state approached assembly elections in a new manner this time.  One will have to wait till December 18 to know about the surprise thrown by Himachalis voters.
