The exit polls for Himachal assembly election have predicted Bharatiya Janata Party win. In this hilly state where electorate has chosen the Congress and BJP alternately in assembly elections, the exit polls projected a clear majority for the saffron party, ousting the Congress from the power. The BJP’s claim to achieve its Mission 50 Plus will be fulfilled if exit poll predictions hold true, feel political observers. However disappointment is brewing in Congress though party leaders are waiting for December 18 when the counting of votes will be held. The Congress leaders were also claiming to accomplish party’s ‘Mission Repeat’. Today’s Chanakya gave the BJP 55 seats 13 to the ruling Congress, with the remaining to others. The Times Now-VMR predicted 51 seats for the BJP in the 68-member Assembly. It gave 16 seats to the Congress and one to other. A party needs 35 seats for a simple majority in the House. The India Today/ Axis exit poll gave 47-55 seats to the saffron party, 13-20 to the Congress and 0-2 to others. The ABP News-CSDS exit poll predicted 35-41 seats for the BJP and 26-32 for the Congress, with one to others.The Congress had returned to power in Himachal Pradesh in 2012 pocketing 36 seats, marginally more than the half-way mark, while the BJP secured 26. The others had bagged the remaining six.

Counting At 48 Centres

The counting of votes for all 68 assembly constituencies would be taken up on December 18 at 48 counting centres simultaneously and the results are likely to be declared by noon. This hilly state went to polls on November 9. A total of 781 counting tables have been set up at these counting centers where 2,820 officers would be deployed for counting of votes, including 940 supervisors, 940 counting assistants and 940 micro-observers, said Chief Electoral Officer, Pushpender Rajput. The counting would be supervised by 68 returning officers, one for every constituency, and web-casting, video- graphing and CCTVs would be used at all counting stations. One polling booth from each constituency would be selected by draw of lots for counting of VVPAT slips, he added. There would be a total ban on mobiles phones at the counting stations, he said.
