Crime Against Women Increases

The security and safety of women in the so-called peaceful state is at stake if figures are any indication. On an average more than 200 women become rape victims every year in Himachal Pradesh. The figures reveal that 2,400 rape cases were registered in last 12 years in the state. Further analysis of these figures discloses a horrifying fact. On an average 20 rape cases are registered every month in this hill state. According to official figures, 2400 rape cases were registered from 2006 to 2017. This figure saw continuous increase after 2006. Where in 2006, an average of 10 rape cases were registered in the state, the same figure crossed 15 mark in 2009 and touched 20 mark in a month in 2015.
Year 2014 was the worst year in this perspective, as the rape cases jumped to a record high of 284. The worrying factor in rape cases was that in most of the cases either the accused was a relative or some known person. The figures reveal that minor girls were also on the radar of criminals. Girls in the age group of 14 to 18 years faced maximum brutality.
The graph of molestation cases has witnessed a surge amidst protective slogans coined for daughters like ‘Beti hai Anmol’. Figures reveal that more than 300 molestation cases were reported every year in last 12 years barring 2006, 2008 and 2012 when this figure was below 300. However in the past five years, this figure has crossed even 400 mark.
