Himachal Governance In Flux

Himachal This Week

With many senior leaders like Prem Kumar Dhumal, Gulab Singh Thakur, Maheshwar Singh having lost their assembly seats, the Bharatiya Janata party seems to have reportedly lost the verve and virtually a situation of flux prevails, plitical observers point out. Floating fate of many officials also has lost its moorings in the mass transfers and things looking topsy-turvey.

Worst outcome of the recent election was the defeat of veterans who held the sway in the House.  When Congress veterans like Asha KumarI and Mukesh Agnihotri did rebut the claim of appointing young chief minister, the House looked perplexed. Asha Kumari quoted figures that how Congress chief ministers were younger as Ram Lal was chief minister at 53, Virbhadra Singh at 49  besides former BJP chief ministers Shanta Kumar at 42 and Prem Kumar dhumal at 53. Chief Minister Jai Ram Thakur having been sworn in is also 53.

The entire theory of youth leadership stood quashed to pieces when it looked that it was a mistaken emphasis. On the other hand, out side the House administration looked totally in flux with dozens of officers carrying their baggage to the new destinations where they are posted. Nearly a dozen police officers were transferred on and the next day 39 administrative officers officers were also transferred. There was a flood of movement and administration looked in tizzy.

The week seemed to have vanished in transfers, poor claims or memory lapses and uncertain movements in governance. Chief Minister will have to take lot of stabilising steps to put the working on even keel, political observers feel. While Congress speakers like Asha Kumar and Agnihotri seemed poised and sure of facts, new team of the BJP was yet to get ready to face the House with confidence and full information, they add.
