National TB Control Programme Launched In Himachal

Under the National Strategic plan 2017-2015 to end TB, the government is launching a special campaign called “Active Case Finding” in High TB burden districts across India. In the strategy of passive case finding, not all people with symptoms seek early medical care and often ignore the illness. In ‘Active Case Finding’ teams consisting of Health Worker and Asha worker of the concerned area will go to make special efforts with objective of reaching the unreached in campaign mode to enhance TB case finding.

Health Minister Vipan Parmar launched this campaign in third round in Himachal from Civil Hospital, Palampur for Kangra, Bilaspur and Hamirpur districts. He flagged off motorcycle borne senior treatment supervisors of various blocks of the Revised National TB Control programme for district Kangra. He stated that in district Kangra, during the 3rd round from January 13 to 30, 2018, total 153,454 persons from the vulnerable population or high risk area in the district will be screened through house to house visit. 654 field teams have been constituted for this task in district Kangra.

Himachal Detects 14,000 TB Patients Annually

India accounts for one quarter of the global TB burden and is on all three lists of the 30 high burden countries for TB, multi drug-resistant TB and TB-HIV. There were 10.4 million new TB cases worldwide. TB remains the top infectious killer in 2016. India topped the list of countries across the world with the highest number of people infected with tuberculosis as an estimated 28 lakh patients were diagnosed and 4.8 lakh died of the highly contagious lung disease in 2016. Despite an extensive National TB programme and significant civil society involvement, TB remains one of India’s severest health crises. Himachal detects about 14,000 TB patients annually. In Kangra, 22,556 people were tested in 2017, of which 3,347 were found to be having TB.
