Himachali Concerns

Himachal’s contribution in safeguarding country’s territorial sanctity needs no introduction but it should be analysed in the backdrop of national concerns. Federal importance of the state is viewed in the backdrop of parliamentary constituencies whereas Himachal’s contribution in the armed forces should be understood in the backdrop of sacrifices made by valiant soldiers from this hilly state. Himachal, in addition, has always made sacrifices of natural resources through big dam projects but the national polity has not recognised it. Chief Minister has once again raised state’s concerns as thirty percent of the country’s total martyrs hailed form Himachal as corroborated by the list of gallantry awards. Four Param Vir Chakras and eleven hundred bravery medals are indicative of state’s contribution in safeguarding nation’s territorial sanctity. The state’s demand for establishing a regiment in Himachal’s name and headquarters of Dogra Regiment have been ignored since long. Union Defence Minister must analyse this hilly state’s contribution in armed forces as Chief Minister underlined the strategic importance of Leh rail line and expansion of Gaggal Air Port. This hilly state being a border state also has the strategic importance and needs expansion of rail, road and air connectivity for civil and military purpose. Network of roads is required in border areas of Kinnaur district whereas Gaggal Air Port’s expansion is associated with national security. Chief Minister has underlined his intentions for Himachal’s progress and future in Defence Ministry’s ambit. Hurdles in hilly state development will be removed if work on strategic projects starts in Himachal having meager resources. The state’s economy will get a boost if Manali-Leh rail project is implemented. Schemes listed by Chief Minister before Union Defence Minister will strengthen national security.
