Himachal’s Tragedy

One can understand the ordeal of thirty nine Indian families whose sons were mission for over three years in Iraq. Four Himachalies were among thirty nine persons who were killed in Iraq where they gone to earn livelihood. Danger has always been associated with employment in Gulf countries but even then Himachalis make a beeline outside passport offices. Thirty nine families had harrowing experience but the government did not know the reality behind this tragedy. Many unscrupulous agents have surfaced in Himachal also in the backdrop of youths desire for employment in foreign countries. Many such incidents in past years cautioned us but these could not fill systemic shortcomings. One can easily be allured to go to foreign countries owing to family compulsions. We always ignore such aspirations and a new batch is ready to leave for foreign countries. One should understand the need for proper counseling and system before leaving to alien countries. Himachal government too needs to expand its domain in the backdrop of recent tragedy. Entire process should be thoroughly scrutinized before one leaves to explore greener pastures abroad. Potential and talent of youths need to be understood in a new context if such employment opportunities culminate into tragic incidents. We are heading towards a bigger danger if youths continue to fall prey to allurements of a job abroad by ignoring local employment opportunities. Definition of employment aspirations should be converted into self employment reality. Youths will not look towards foreign allurements if present system of education is linked with self employment. Himachal needs a self employment policy to give advice and direction to its educated youth.
