The state’s ups and downs this week

Bumper Mango Crop Likely in Kangra

Nurpur : Kangra is likely to witness a bumper mango crop if flower laden mango orchards in lower areas of the district are any indication. Notably, mango growers in Nurpur, Jawali, Indora and Fatehpur subdivisions of Kangra district have been witnessing on and off-fruit seasons for a long time. This year, the growers are cheerful to witness on-fruit season. Last year, it was off season and the growers had scanty mango crop. Mango is a major cash crop in the lower Kangra areas and it is the financial backbone of the farmers as the fruit growers settle their financial management during the on-fruit season. The off and on-season cycle comes every alternate year. The mango trees in the orchards are laden with flowers. As per official information, the Nurpur and Indora subdivisions have 4,167 and 6,470 hectares of mango orchards, respectively. In the last on season (2015-16) mango crops were cultivated on 20,880 hectares in the Kangra district in which 24,900 metric tons of mangoes were produced.

No Educational Institute From Himachal In Top 100 List

Shimla : The overall ranking for 2018 released by the National Institutional Ranking Framework, Ministry of Human Resource Development has exposed the credibility of big claims made by the state government. Ironically, no university or institution of higher education from Himachal succeeded to make a place among 100 top institutions in the overall ranking for 2018. Notably, Indian Institute of Technology, Mandi, and the Dr YS Parmar University of Horticulture and Forestry, Nauni, Solan, ranked 37th and 84th, respectively, in 2017. However this time they failed to figure on the top 100 list. Himachal Pradesh University that was ranked 122nd in the university category in 2017 does not figure even among the top 150 universities, while the Dr YS Parmar University of Horticulture and Forestry, Solan, has slipped from 51st position in 2017 to 71st in 2018. The Jaypee University of Information Technology that ranked 93rd last year is not in the first 100 list this time. As per the ranking in the engineering category, the Indian Institute of Technology, Mandi, is the only one that has retained its position (28). The National Institute of Technology, Hamirpur, dropped from 59th position to 64th. However, the Jaypee University of Information Technology is the only institute that improved its ranking from 84th to 83rd. No college from the state could secure its position in the list of top 200 colleges in the country.
