Dr. Rajendra Prasad Government Medical College and Hospital, Tanda caters to the medical exigencies of people of six districts in lower areas. Established in 1996, this institute has grown with the passage of time. However, its working has been jeopardised every time a new medical college is opened in Himachal; be it in Chamba, Nahan, Mandi and now Hamirpur. The faculty is shifted from two main health institutions of this hilly state, namely IGMC, Shimla and Tanda Medical College with the latter suffering more due to recent transfers of teaching staff. The transfers are effected in the wake of medical Council of India's team likely to visit newly opened medical colleges for granting recognition. As a result, 40 faculty positions are presently vacant in TMC that is hampering teaching, research and other activities. About 500 MBBS and 80 post graduate students are pursuing studies at TMC. IN addition, many other sanctioned projects are yet to be implemented here.

Despite 70 years of independence, according to World Bank report, still country’s population lacked access to all-weather roads. Also, award of road contracts especially in rural areas has been a major source of corruption in one way or the other. Between 2001 and 2013, the state lawmakers unfairly awarded rural road building contracts worth Rs 3,592 crore to contractors from their own caste, a new study by Princeton University, USA, published in the Journal of Development Economics has revealed. Unfairly awarded contracts often resulted in more expensive road construction, the study found. Hundreds of these roads appear to have never been built, based on the 2011 census records, keeping hundreds of thousands of people cut off from road access.

There is a grain of truth in Kashmir leader Farooq Abdullah’s statement that Mohammad Ali Jinnah was not responsible for partition. But Farooq is wrong to blame Jawaharlal Nehru and Sardar Patel for it. I am witness to that era and this is how I understood the events. Jinnah was an “ambassador” of Hindu-Muslim unity, as Sarojini Naidu, a top Congress leader, put it. He was driven to it.
