Automobile sector is booming in Himachal as the sale of all types of vehicles has increased tremendously in this hilly state. With rapid urbanization and fast-paced lifestyle, people are opting to own vehicles as per their needs. The largest growth is witnessed in small car segment and two wheelers as more than 30,000 cars and 50,000 two wheeler adding up every year. As a result, all brands of vehicles, cars, two wheelers and commercial vehicles are opening their show rooms in Himachal to cash on the boom. These showrooms are spread across the state with Mandi district emerging as the major hub for automobile sector. Not only this, automobile sector has also ventured into rural areas to tap the vast potential of growing sector in Himachal.
Mandi is Biggest Automobile Hub
Mandi district has emerged as biggest market in Himachal for automobile sector catering to requirements of various districts. The area houses showrooms of companies that have selected only Mandi to establish their base. It is evident from the fact that vehicles sold in Mandi are running in other districts also. The rapid growth in last five years automobile sector has taken business to new heights in the area with the sales crossing Rs. 700 crore every year.
Maximum Sales during Festival Season
The area witnesses business worth several crores in sales of car, SUV, jeep, taxi vehicles, two wheeler and all types of commercial vehicles. Half of the sales of automobiles are recorded in this auto hub during festival season, Diwali and year end. Brands like Maruti, Tata and Hyundai have major share in auto sector in the area. Earlier, only a couple of automobile brands were dominant in the market but now more than a dozen new brands have entered the market here. Auto sector has gained momentum in Himachal and thus vehicles are sold even in off season with golden period being recorded during Diwali days.
Monthly Sale of 2000 Vehicles
More than 2000 vehicles of all categories are sold in Mandi district every month with Maruti, Hyundai, Nissan, Mahindra in addition to Honda, TVS and Suzuki two wheelers accounting for major chunk of vehicles. Mahindra, Tata, Nissan, Renault, Hyundai and Ford have also their showrooms in Mandi for people interested in buying SUVs. Some of the automobile companies have opened their showrooms in rural areas also including Jogindernagar, Aani and Sarkaghat to provide sales and service in these areas.

Youth Prefers Bikes
Youth in Himachal prefers motorbikes to commute from their home to working place. This sector has also witnessed significant growth as nearly 50,000 new vehicles have been added in this category last year. Trend has changed with the introduction of fuel efficient and trendy motor bikes and even light weight scooty and mopeds. Today’s youth is crazy about the speed and cost efficiency of motor bikes as different two wheeler manufacturers have introduced different models in the market.
Crazy for Cars
People in Himachal are crazy to buy cars owing to many factors. As limited public transport is available especially in rural areas, more people are opting to own a private vehicle for smooth mobility. In such areas connectivity in villages has reached almost saturation level. In addition, purchasing power of people has also increased besides availability of loan facilities. More than 50,000 vehicles have increased in car sector alone in past one year.
Annual 15% Growth in Auto Sale
Himachal is recording nearly 15% growth in automobile sale as nearly one lakh new vehicles of all categories are adding to the list. Every month around 8000 new vehicles hit Himachali roads thus adding to automobile revolution. Not only people are purchasing private vehicles, unemployed youth are major buyers to earn their livelihood. Most of the purchases are done during festival season. Himachal has 1077404 vehciles of all categories registered with state transport department.
Solan not far Behind
Solan district is also not far behind as far as expansion of automobile sector is concerned. Solan district accounts for sale of nearly 1700 vehicles of all brands every month with Goyal Motors getting the major share. People have special interest in purchasing small cars as personal vehicles keeping in view the hilly terrain. Nearly 60 motorbikes, including Bajaj and Hero, are sold every month. Mahindra SUV has also made its entry in the district that has nearly 30 showrooms of automobiles and about 20 of two wheelers. However, the district lacks in sale of trendy automobiles. Most of the showrooms are located on Shimla-Kalka highway.
Motorbikes dominate Auto sector in Una
Una accounts for sales of nearly 800 vehicles every month with motorbike accounting for 50% share in addition to 15% commercial vehicles. Number of vehicles in una district has doubled in a decade with most of the showrooms of different brands located on Una-Amb road. Tractor sale also significant in this district as agriculture is major avocation of people. Its available brands include Preet, Sonalika, Sawraj, Messi, Mahindra and others.
