Chandigarh, Punjab Qualify From North Zone For Santosh Trophy Finals

HTWChandigarh from Group A and Punjab from Group B qualified for the final round of the 71st Santosh Trophy. Punjab blanked Jammu & Kashmir in the Santosh Trophy North Zone qualifiers held in Sundernagar, while Chandigarh defeated Uttar Pradesh to qualify for the final round. Punjab edged out Jammu and Kashmir. After a goalless first half, J&K came close to score a goal when Nainjot Singh got hold of the ball in front of goal but he failed to get any power in his shot and the ball went straight into the hands of Punjab keeper Paramjit Singh. At the other end, Punjab broke the deadlock when J&K defender Aakif Javaid made a blunder to clear a long ball in the box. The ball rolled to Rajbir Singh who fired it into the net. In the pool A, Chandigarh topped the group to qualify for the final round. Chandigarh after defeating the hosts Himachal Pradesh (4-1) and Delhi (1-0), defeated Uttar Pradesh to finish the group with an all win record. Chandigarh took an early lead through a Gagan Kalyan header and doubled it in the 44th minute through a long ranger from Girish to seal the win in the first half itself as no more goals were scored after the break.

HPU Women’s Team Wins Bronze in Handball

HTWHimachal Pradesh University women team of Himachal Pradesh University has won bronze medal in the All India Inter-University Handball Championship held at Periyar University, Salem in Tamil Nadu. This is for the first time that the handball team of HPU won any medal at all India level. The team defeated Calicut University by a huge margin of 27-19 to win bronze medal. Though, the team gave a tough  fight to Kurukshetra University team in the semifinal, but they fail to win the match. Kurukshetra team defeated HPU team by 32-30. In the semifinal match, Monika performed extraordinarily and scored 10 goals, followed by Nidhi’s (8), Deepa (3) and two each by Shailja, Shivani and Jyoti.

Himachal Wins 10 Medals In National Kick Boxing

Himachali kick boxers brought laurels to the state as they clinched 10 medals in the National Kick Boxing Championship held at Patna in Bihar. These 10 medals include one gold, two silver and seven bronze medals. Ravi from Chamba bagged gold medal, while Rupesh and Komal from Solan secured silver medals. The bronze medal winners include players of the 15 to 18 years age category, including Lokesh, Mitika, Tarsem, Chetan, Naveen and Satinder from Solan.
