SkyBus in Himachal

A new beginning has been made as efforts to bring SkyBus in Himachal are in last stages. Memorandum of Understanding with a Belarus company is significant that underlines the picture of urban transport system in this hilly state. It remains to be seen how successful the SkyBus project will be in Himachal as the model was also envisaged for Goa earlier. The model prepared for Goa could not begin but Urban Development Minister Sudhir Sharma is leaving no stone unturned to make it a realty in Dharamshala. Passengers will  experience elevated transport system if the project is completed within three years as promised. Success of aerial SkyBus increases due to its technique, simpleness and power supply amidst narrow roads and heavy vehicular traffic. Traffic is considered safe, comfortable, fast and less expansive despite initial cost and maintenance expenses. It will reduce the traffic pressure as it requires less space and is noise and pollution free. Urban Development Minister has taken a new initiate in Himachal’s context to create a parallel infrastructure to Metro rail. SkyBus will incur one third the cost of metro rail and this service is also cheaper. Linking SkyBus with rope way projects gives rise to a new hope in Himachal having unique geographical conditions and ample electricity. It will open new vistas of tourism if rope way projects are constructed for freight transportation. A huge connectivity infrastructure will be developed through proposed sixty one national highways and four lane highways. There will be quantitative increase in tourism potential if religious places are connected with rail network. The present government has been successful in constructing rope ways at certain places and such modes of transportation can develop entertainment places and infrastructure development at major tourist destinations. Himachal doesn’t have economic strength to pursue metro rail projects but BBN participation can be ensured in Chandigarh’s proposed metro rail project. SkyBus can be an alternative urban transport system keeping in view the increasing pressure on roads due to increasing number of vehicles.
