The smart city tag seems to have added wings to already smart town. After attaining this tag, Dharamshala is galloping fast on development track and traversing new milestones with each passing day. The city will be India’s first city to have the service of suspended transport system that is so unique and cutting edge in its way. And now the smart city has added another unique feather in its cap. As a part of Centre’s smart city mission, Dharamshala has become India’s first city to have sensor based underground waste bin network. Minister of Housing, Urban Development and Town & Country Planning Sudhir Sharma inaugurated the sensor based underground waste bin project from Dari ground. 70 hi-tech underground waste bins have been placed and made functional in the first phase of the project in Dharamshala. Sudhir Sharma said that as 70 modern hi-tech sensor based underground waste bins have been placed in each ward of Dharamshala, they would not only protect the environment but also protect health of people. He told that many new projects have been brought into Dharamshala in last few years and a new era of development has begun after the announcement of Dharamshala as second capital of Himachal Pradesh. “Dharamshala has moved far ahead in putting in place a state-of-the-art, highly advanced, municipal solid waste management system, based upon the principles of segregation at source, waste to value, zero land fill and community ownership,” added the minister.

About Hi-Tech Underground Waste Bins

Each ward of Dharamshala is provided with three properly stickered bins marked for biodegradable, non-biodegradable and inert material so that the residents can easily differentiate between bins for various types of wastes. This helps in facilitating the segregation of waste and enhances aesthetics of the surroundings. The automatic sensor based waste bins installed in Dharamshala are best in its class and are designed with low-level throw-ins so that children and physically challenged people can easily use them. The relatively higher capacity will also help in reducing the collection frequency thus helping in reduction of operation cost of the system. A fully automated system reduced the possibility for physical contact with the waste and helped in improving the work condition for sanitary workers. With the automatic underground garbage collection people won’t be exposed to garbage and its foul smell and it will also help the garbage collectors in managing the garbage easily and will ease of their problem of segregating it after collection in a big way.
