Political Analysis

Himachal This Week

newsThe Opposition Bharatiya Janata Party is trying to corner the ruling Congress government in Himachal if frequent visits of central ministers to this hilly state are any indication. The opposition is now raising the development plank to push Chief Minister  Virbhadra Singh on the back foot in state’s politics. Union Home Minister emotionally associated this hilly state with the national pride during his visit to Hamirpur in order to tocuh Himachal’s concern, political observers point out.

As Himachalis visualise their emotional responsibility in country’s existence, the direct action against the enemy can stir Himachal’s politics also, they opine, adding that hill people can feel happy over Rajnath Singh’s firm stance against Pakistan keeping in view Himachal’s army background. However the state government also holds a good record in initiating welfare schemes families of soldier. Though Union Home Minister touched the issue of recruitments in para military forces but Himachal’s concern is quota in recruitment to the army. It remains to be seen what would be state government’s political reply to all these happenings.

There is no denying the fact that the BJP is facing difficulty to raise anti-incumbency issue as Virbhadra government is riding on its developmental model. Will increased political activities ahead of general assembly elections strengthen the BJP even as it has started highlighting Modi government’s achievements in Himachal? It will be the biggest issue and a cause of worry for Congress also, political observers feel. The ministers like Gadkari and Nadda can do miracles if Centre decides to extend support. Report card of the state and Centre will at stake as peoplecast votes on many issues including development and good governance. The real test lies in selection of candidates as BJP’s national president Amit Shah has stirred youth aspirants. The party is continuously working on its electoral planning whereas the Congress is trying to bank upon power even as ruling party is reportedly mired in intra-party wranglings. As Congress is not strong at the Centre, the present state Congress government will have to fight on its own. And that brings Virbahdra’s political dominance once again to the fore in political battle ahead.
