Atal Tinkering Labs To Inculcate Scientific Innovation Culture

Modern laboratories will be opened in schools in Himachal Pradesh to arouse interest among students towards science subject. The Union Government will provide funds for opening these labs under the Atal Tinkering Labs mission. These labs will be opened in 5th to 12th class schools. However, schools will have to submit online applications in order to avail this facility.  The schools can apply for this projects on or before August 31, 2017 for the Atal Tinkering Lab project started by the NITI Aayog. The schools will have to apply on NITI Aayog website for this project. Under the programme, Niti Aayog has targeted to set up a total of 500 such labs across the country in select schools. However there will be equal opportunity given to both private and government schools. NITI Aayog is aiming to inculcate scientific innovation and research culture among young minds through this unique initiative. NITI Aayog will facilitate opening of special laboratories equipped with modern facilities in the schools under this project. However to become part of this project, the schools will have to fulfill the students strength and examinations results criteria set by NITI Aayog. Government will provide grant-in-aid of one time set-up cost of Rs 10 lakh to the selected schools. Also, they will get operational expenses of Rs 10 lakh each for five years.

Who Can Avail Benefit?

According to NITI Aayog, students from not only the school where this modern lab is opened but those living in adjoining areas could also learn new things related to science in Atal Tinkering Lab opened in their respective areas.

Requisite Criteria

To be eligible for availing modern lab facility under Atal Tinkering Labs mission, the school will have to fulfill certain criteria. The schools should be established in an area of 1000 square metre and have a strength of at least 250 students. However earlier the area was set at 1500 square metre and student strength was set at 400, but Himachal Pradesh has been provided relief in this criteria.
