Tomato Business Flourishing In Himachal

htwThe bumper production of tomato coupled with good rates has brought good fortunes for the farmers of Solan. About seven lakh tomato crates have reached Solan vegetable market in just two months. The total tomato business in the state has exceeded beyond Rs. 70 crore mark. After a long period, tomato business has surpassed such a big figure.        According to information, Solan stands at first position in the state tomato production. Tomato production is practised in about 10,000 hectare area in Solan district. Farmers are producing hybrid and Him Sona variety of tomato in majority of areas here. The tomato started reaching the market from Solan district by June end. Initially farmers got a price of Rs. 500 per crate. But thereafter, it witnessed a continuous surge and Him Sona variety fetched a price of RS. 1600 per crate. This is the best rate this variety has fetched until now. Notably, tomato planted in one beegha of land has fetched an amount of two lakh to three lakh rupees to farmer because of good price of the tomato this season. The tomato from the Solan district is still reaching the market. Farmers are getting a rate of Rs. 900 per crate these days in the market. It is expected that local tomato will keep reaching market till first week of September and tomato business could surpass the magical figure of one billion rupees this season.

Farmers Suffered Loss Last Year

Farmers of the hill state had to bear big losses in tomato production last year. Due to bumper tomato production in Punjab and Haryana, farmers fetched a rate of Rs. 200 to Rs. 300 per crate only. However this year, bumper tomato production and good price has compensated farmers previous years loss.
