Strange is the world as even those who claim to be spiritual and truthful turn out to be hoaxes or frauds. It happens in political field as parties which claim to be transparent turn out to be most opaque making relentless effort to fool the public. But one does not expect of such enormous scale of fraud which Gurmit Singh proved in the CBI court of Panchkula.

* His power emanated from the political clout that followed him due to his dictate to his followers which party to vote. He supported Congress party all the years in Haryana except last election when BJP emerged winner.

It is bigger travesty of faith that judiciary that should have delivered the judgments at the earliest saving hundreds of girls from being duped or men being led to pleasure garden, delivered the judgement fifteen years later as the case was first reported in 2002. But after doing so and creating a frank stein blamed the government of Haryana and its Chief Minister. It threatened to remove the Director General of Police for not preventing violence. They forgot that had judiciary not taken fifteen years the problem would not have grown to this colossal proportion. But judges could say anything and get away with it.   The result is that we faced an avoidable tragedy of 39 deaths and hundreds of injured persons in Panchkula in Haryana where a court decided to convict Dera Sacha Sauda’s head Gurmit Singh for his crime of rape. Score of girls were in the service of the Guru as Sadhvis and were exploited for years to satisfy the lust of men power. Sucha Sauda chief had created an empire in more than 700 acre of land in Sirsa over the years and it housed anything you can imagine from shopping to entertainment to hospitals and sports facilities. It is unofficially stated that the Dera had about six crore followers and they were so ardent in their belief and faith in the Guru that they could do anything on his command. It is a marvel of mass hypnotism that he could create such an army of devotees who developed blind faith in him.

His power emanated from the political clout that followed him due to his dictate to his followers which party to vote. He supported Congress party all the years in Haryana except last election when the BJP emerged winner. Virtually, he was a king maker and political leaders of all parties made a beeline to him seeking favour. Perhaps this was the background against which the High Court remarked ‘This is political surrender to allure vote bank’. But the colossus of Dera was brought down by a girl who was victim of his lust. Her anonymous complaint to the then Prime Minister A.B. Vajpayee started the case in 2002 which culminated in final conviction in 2017 due to judicial delays. Now judiciary is blaming executive or political leadership for the mess it has created when the situation had gone out of control.

How much Chief Minister Manohar Lal Khattar contributed to the tragedy with failure to control and prevent the gathering? There is hue and cry in the media and opposition to sack Khattar but he was finally responsible for controlling the situation after the initial failure of three hours chaos. But there is no denying the fact that he failed on two counts miserably: First and most lethal mistake was not implementing Section 144 fully. The police had not clear instruction as they were not asked to stop gathering of crowds and only weapons were checked. The argument that gradual tightening was the strategy is not acceptable as prevention of gathering was more important than anything else. Second failure of Khattar was lack of communication skill.

While Punjab Chief Minister Amarinder Singh kept the communication on with people and assuring them of full control, Khattar was lusterless and quiet. His spokesmen too did not communicate to people at large with articulation. Consequently, his too soft approach hit his performance in spite of thorough transparency and devoted work. Now since Baba is behind the bar and is going to spend 20 years history of his rise and fall will close without a whimper.

First Passenger: Why too many tourists’ cars are taking a U-turn from Gagret while entering Himachal?

Second Passenger: They are complaining that after traveling on smooth Punjab roads, Himachal is a nightmare with roads full of pits.
