Himachal This Week

Chhath Pooja, also known by the names Chhathi and Chhath Parv is a famous festival of Madhesh and Mithila regions of Bihar, Jharkhand, Uttar Pradesh and Nepal. But now, as migrant labourers have been living in Himachal for the past some years, this festival has made its existence here too. Migrant labourers celebrate this festival with joy in Baddi and Nalagarh areas, where migrants of Bihar, UP and Jharkhand live in large numbers. Large number of women performed the pooja rituals seeking Sun’s blessings. They celebrate this ancient festival by worshiping the Sun God and his wife Usha thanking them and seeking their blessings for granting their wishes. This festival generally falls in October or November in the English calendar. Chhath is celebrated for four days and devotees perform Pooja following rigorous rituals. These rituals include bathing in holy rivers, fasting along with abstaining from drinking water, standing for long duration of time in the holy water, and offering ‘prasad’ and ‘arghya’ to the rising sun and setting sun. The Sun is said to be a healer in case of many health conditions and so by worshiping the Sun during this auspicious period, the devotees pray for prosperity, well-being, happiness and longevity of their near and dear ones.
